Les envolées
Jane Hayes, piano
Farangis Nurulla-Khoja, composer
Filmed at the Annex Theatre.
Statement from Farangis:
"I was happy and honored to compose a piano solo work for Jane Hayes.
I think, the piece represents her ability to be able to embrace different aspects of life. Before starting composing, I wanted to get to know her better as an artist, as a pianist. We had a long and exciting converstaion about from the most profound to the banal, at the same time...She told me that during the pandemic, she performed often Piazzolla, Scriabin – it lead me to approach the piano both virtuosically as well as look at it as a force of sonic exploration.
In a musical sphere which is constantlly turning to technology as art, I try, nevertheless, to create different by using old in a new way. And I think the Jane’s approach to piano produces a unique way which gives a composer the innovative ideas to work with.
In Les Envolées, I versed in the melody of my grand father, composer Ziyodullo Shahidi. The piece was created mostly during the pandemic, a nostalgic period not being able to visit my country of origin."
